German Opportunity Card Requirements: Two Pathways
There are two main ways to meet theGerman Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) requirements:
- The first pathway is for skilled professionals who already have their foreign qualification fully recognized in Germany. If your degree or vocational training is recognized, you qualify directly without needing to score points.
- The second pathway uses the Chancenkarte points system for those whose qualifications are not yet fully recognized. To meet the Opportunity Card requirements under this pathway, you need a foreign university degree or at least two years of vocational training recognized in your home country, proof of German at A1 level or English at B2 level, and a minimum of six points in the points system.
Opportunity Card Points System
The Opportunity Card points system awards points based on several criteria. You need at least six points to qualify. Here is how the Chancenkarte points system distributes scores:
- Qualification partially recognized in Germany: 4 points
- Five years of work experience in the last seven years: 3 points
- Good German skills at B2 level: 3 points
- Two years of work experience in the last five years: 2 points
- Sufficient German skills at B1 level: 2 points
- Age under 35: 2 points
- Age between 35 and 40: 1 point
- Basic German skills at A2 level: 1 point
- English at C1 level: 1 point
- Previous stay in Germany of at least six months: 1 point
- Qualification in a shortage occupation: 1 point
- Spouse also meets Chancenkarte requirements: 1 point
